Back from foreign lands. The 2025 Gastronomical light line lure tour of Portugal was a mix of stress, pressure, pure delight, with a constant theme of amazing food. The video is now available on my "fishyrob" youtube channel. Then, a little break in Fuerteventura where fishing was typically hard, with some great rewards for a stubborn approach. Which left me gagging to re-unite with BIF1 to begin my UK season.

I never take paying clients out without knowing what is available, as I would never want to oversell poor fishing for the sake of making a few quid. Far better to assess what is happening and then offer that for sale, confident in the knowledge nobody is getting ripped off. And so I invited some people along, mostly folk who had been out in Portugal with me, to find the best of what was happening.

And for the first week, that was just plaice and herrings. Plaice on slow-jig and isome, herrings on white Tronixpro feathers which feature a small hook. The ultimate herring feathers. And these are fished in combination. Always looking for bass, I found just two.

But with each trip out, the sonar was revealing change. More and more clusters of what I suspect are sandeel gathering to spawn, and this tends to kick off the bass season. Indeed, by the last trip just two days ago, with just two rods aboard we landed five bass, dropping perhaps the biggest around 4lb at the net. With the bass eating season beginning on the 1st April, all is looking good that there will be food for all. Herrings themselves are delicious, either pickled, smoked or fried with a dusting of flour. Spent creatures, so sadly delicious herring roe is not on the menu as it was before I departed. First proper sailings beginning this afternoon, with a sold out boat tomorrow. Spaces on Tuesday first sailing, which currently looks to coincide with very light winds. Happy to be back as the weather warms, and the fishes respond. Watch this space...
