Brighton Inshore Fishing - Catch report 4th September 2024

A most peculiar day. Now into September, which I like very much for fishing. It is rare to struggle in September. Or should I say, it was rare to struggle in September. So, from the beginning. First sailing, I was blessed to have returning to me, Mitch, Kevin, David and James the potter (Search SALTYDOG on Instagram. Impressive! ) and out onto nicely calm seas. I knew exactly where I wanted to be for the first 30 minutes and that was on the squid, as we had that long to wait for the new flood.

That went well, with ten or so landed before there was enough movement to proceed to the bass fishing. This was surprisingly harder with very few fish to be found. A huge new arrival that I have heard much about but only met myself today was also having the same thoughts as me, but I am not for competing with grey seals, even huge ones, so we left and hunted elsewhere. It was a good call, as we put a dozen bass across the gunwales, of which 7 were killed for culinary purposes. A small cod and some gurnard, all released. Double figures of mackerel byecatch as well. A really good foodie outing.

Next sailing, with new folk onboard, including two really lovely anglers that I deffo want back as well as two regulars who were similarly shocked that we.... blanked.!!!

Third sailing was with Mark, Paul, Ray and Lee, all returnees. But this was the first dedicated squid trip of the year. Lots learned and I am confident I can bring numbers up, but 75 squid plus 6 cuttles wasnt a bad first stab. And of course, a black boat and even blacker squidders. NEVER WEAR YOUR GOOD STUFF if you are coming on a squid trip.
