Brighton Inshore Fishing - Catch report 28th September 2024

With wind shutting down the rest of the month, this was to be the final day of 3 sailings. I say "was" because, although conditions were ok for sailing, what perhaps I had not taken into account of (despite fishing on the shore through much of it) was just how much rain we got the last few days. The inshore was very fresh, with grey water, suggesting road run offs, a feature in places. Not very nice to be a little fish and as such I made very few contacts with bait. Viz was mostly less than six inches. Not for lure fishing. As such, after a few quick checks here and there, and restricted from going too far by a stronger N wind than forecast, only two options remained. Bitch about the shit conditions for the next 2,5 hours and take money from dissatisfied customers, or head in and hope they bring that money back another day. Which is why I am sitting here typing up the catch report way ahead of schedule. Except...

My friend Siri is a great squid angler, and he was catching. They seems happy to feed in the deeper holes, where perhaps salinity is less affected. And so, I hastily arranged two squid trips via a whatsapp group I formed for this purpose (text YOUR NAME and the word SQUID to 07970 112774). Two trips were quickly snapped up. So, at 1230, we once more departed the marina entrance, on a very single minded mission.

I had pre-warned the group that, although clearly squid were feeding, it would not be as it is when we have crystal clear water and good salinity with bait fish around. And this is exactly how it turned out. 4 rods over 5 hours landed a grand total of 7 squid. But a friend fishing mid channel found squid to be a menace. So, it makes logical sense to jump to what we already know. Squid fishing needs the perfect conditions for the best results. After some heavy rain in the early hours of Monday morning, winds take a Northerly turn, rains are not forecast, and we should be back to business as normal by perhaps Wednesday, if not then Thursday.
