First sailing, and my job was to take four EA bailiffs, out, on the dying side of a big spring ebb tide. What could possibly go wrong? The only saving grace being the current start time of 0530 is well before sunrise, and pre dawn light, is the best bass light of the day. And a bit of sadness as well. It turns out Joe, who has been a customer of mine even before BIF1, is about to emigrate to Japan, so, I guess a bit of a farewell trip as well.
Would neptune recognise this and reward? He kind of did. No less than 24 bass we landed, across a few venues. Took perhaps 4 moves before we found reliable shoals. Lots of table fish and a max kill. Light winds. Beautiful sunrise plus fog running down poole valley. Pretty much perfect really.
Would it hold for 2nd sailing? On this one, Curteiss, Mark and Danny. Last time Mark and Danny were out with me was during the rot, and worse, a session shortened by unpredicted winds. This time was better than that time, although fishing was quite hard despite a good strong new flood.
Yet from the seven bass landed, three were table fish, so at least a fish a piece for the guys to take home to loving wives, proving a) their mastery as a hunter gatherer and b) they were fishing and not chasing the barperson in the half crown.
And now, another short break for wind to come and ruin things. Looking like a magazine article in the morning, and a pump and surf in the evening. I do not dread winds as I used to now I have returned to shore guiding. Indeed, a part of me is a little excited. It remains my roots, and the thing I love doing the most.
