Brighton Inshore Fishing - Catch report 23rd March 2025

Two sailings today, but with both being on a tiny tide, expectations were not high, and results met up with expectations. First sailing, with Abby, Calum, Dave and Max, we started on plaice and herrings. Herrings failed to materialise in numbers, and although the few plaice we caught were quality, we were tempted to head for the bass sooner than perhaps we would have had their been more action.

The bass fishing was very poor though. Despite committing half the session to finding them, we didnt have a single bite. Quite a contrast to the previous evening. And so, the session ended without much WOW factor. A quick breakfast in Zio's, and then off to do some more fishing. This time joined by David, Mark, Loz and John. And this time we came out on the deadest part of the tide, and with not many options, it was back on the bass.

This time at least we found them, although they were biting shy, not helped when a rib turned up and fished the same drift, but casting baits for plaice. Just 2 landed, before we headed off to where some better plaice are to be found. Where, we did find better plaice. But not in big numbers, in part due to lack of movement as the very slight breeze opposed the tide. Small gurnard and whiting came with a move to deeper water, and we finished off with some reasonable herring action in tight. But all in all a pretty tough day. Exactly what we expected on a tiny tide in March in fairness, and still there were smiles all round.

Currently an empty boat tomorrow, so I will take advantage of a great forecast to go and find where the squid are holding up. Quite sure I know exactly where, but I wont put any squid trips on until I have firm results. If squid are of interest to you, feel free to join my Whatsapp group where Squid trips are arranged. Simply message YOUR NAME and the word SQUID to 07970 112774. Spring squid are all about outsized creatures, but in much smaller numbers than autumn time. Ten squid to the boat would be a great spring squid session.
